“Ounces” on a vinyl banner describe the weight of one square yard of material. Heavier vinyl is thicker, stiffer and more opaque. The right weight depends on how long the banner will hang, whether it is printed on both sides, and whether light will come from behind it.

13 oz: the standard
Scrim vinyl with a polyester thread reinforcement. It handles rain, sun and wind for a season, prints full color and rolls up small for shipping. If you are not sure, this is the one.
15 oz: for banners that stay up
Thicker and more tear-resistant. Choose it for construction fences, seasonal banners that hang for months, and anything in high wind.
18 oz blockout: no show-through
A black core between two white faces means a design on one side never ghosts through to the other. That makes it the material for double-sided banners (printed at 1.8× the single-sided price) and for banners hung in front of windows or lights.
